| The Temple University Tennis Club was founded in October of 2006 by Justin Landis, a former division one player at Temple University who was looking for a more fun and less stressful way to stay involved in tennis. Landis worked with the USTA Middle States section to start the tennis club. During this first year of existence, the club was mainly marketed by Landis as a way for recreational tennis players to have fun and play matches in a stress free environment. He primarily marketed the club through facebook and through the campus recreation department. We played in our first USTA Campus Championship - Middle States that October, although we were only able to bring three players. For the 2007-2008 year, the tennis club became much more solidified and much more organized. Landis was able to form a responsible executive board, consisting of Stephanie Coder, Paul Kuhne, Frank Cotroneo, and Kevin Patterson. We were also able to build a relationship with the campus recreation department, where we received information regarding rules, regulations, and funding at Temple. Also in the fall of 2007, our team competed in the Philadelphia District of the Middle States Tennis On Campus League, in which we recorded wins against Rowan, Drexel, and PCOM. We also purchased team uniforms in the fall, and were quickly becoming established as one of the more talented sport clubs at Temple University. In the spring of 2008, we were able to recruit a great deal of talented, collegiate level players including Phil Lieberman, Mike Stedronsky, Ariel Maidansky, Rob Spencer, and Angela Naumescu. These players assisted in transforming the Temple Tennis Club from a recreational, fun club, to a more serious, competitive team. We competed in the Blue Hen Invitational and City 6 Invitational in the spring of 2008. This coming fall looks to be a busy season for us as we are continuing to increase our executive board, talent level, and schedule. The Temple University Tennis Club looks to provide both recreational and competitive tennis experiences to students at Temple University who do not have the time requirements and or skill/dedication level to play at the division one level. Competition will take place within the club and also against other university club teams. Due to the increasing amount of talent on the team, we are entering our first year of having both an A (cherry) and B (white) team. The cherry team will consist of former division one players and seriously competitive players, while the white team will consist of recreational players. We are very excited to be competing in the Middle States Tennis On Campus League this upcoming season. In terms of fundraisers, we teamed up with Jimmy Johns Sandwich Shop in 2007 and they donated 10% of sales to our club. We also collect dues and receive some funding from the recreation department. Next year as we increase our executive board, we hope to increase our fundraising efforts. In terms of practices, we usually have 2 evening practices a week in which we play doubles, king of the court, and singles. A few members of the team also train together outside of practice. We are looking forward to having new members join for this upcoming season. We have a feeling that this season is going to have a great turnout Temple University Tennis Club is a new, emerging club in the USTA Tennis On Campus program and we are looking forward to growing and improving each year! |
