| Daniel Heckmann, a first-year medical student at USD, started the USD Club Tennis in September 2007. He discovered that there was no varsity men's tennis program at the university, and he wanted to provide an opportunity for men on campus to play intercollegiate tennis. During its first year the club was open only to men (as USD does have a varsity women's team), but beginning in the fall of 2008 it will be open to women as well. The club's mission is to provide an opportunity for tennis players on campus to meet each other, to play and practice regularly, and to compete against club and varsity teams from other schools. The club's first year consisted of weekly practices, six matches against other schools, and several fundraisers. Early next fall the club will run a tennis tournament for the campus and community to kick off the year. |
