Team History
For the past thirty years, Utah Valley University has changed from a community college in the ‘70s to a full-fledged university this summer.  The fluctuations in our tennis program have been just as dramatic in that three decade time period.  There has been a tennis club off and on for the past thirty years, with our most recent attempt being about eight years ago.  Ourselves, Snow College, Salt Lake Community College, College of Eastern Utah, and Ricks College (along with other Utah schools making their debuts) worked together to keep a tennis league alive.  However, 2000 was the year Ricks College switched to BYU-Idaho which resulted in a drop of their club teams.  Since the spring of 2000, it has become difficult to organize and coordinate extramural tennis activities state wide and almost impossible at a regional level.  With the support of the Tennis on Campus program and synchronizing with USTA, the sporadic participation of our school in the past will never have to happen again.

Our team’s mission statement is two-fold: to promote leisurely tennis activities for Utah Valley University students and community members, and also to provide opportunities for a competitive team to develop skills through tournament play.

This is the first semester our club has existed in a number of years, however, we have been able to establish for ourselves a routine within this short amount of time.  We hold practices three times a week after school from 5:00-7:00 P.M.  We are in the process of configuring an indoor routine for the months of November through February when the weather turns snowy and cold.  Doug Dyreng, coordinator of Snow College's tennis club, set up three matches this semester involving ourselves, Snow College, and SLCC (Salt Lake Community College).  We hope these types of tournaments continue in the future.

It is important to note that Utah Valley University will be getting a NCAA Division 1 Men’s tennis team in 2009 and a Women’s team in 2010.  Our club looks forward to supporting these athletes and being involved in promoting tennis in the Utah Valley.  The tennis program at UVU may not have been big in the past, but it is continually growing and is here to stay.
