Team History
Forming under the whims of spontaneity, the UC Davis Tennis Club emerged when two individuals’ divergent visions met at one common goal: to promote the great sport of tennis.  These two individuals simultaneously witnessed the lack of organized tennis at UC Davis, a school where hundreds of students participated in the sport without a hint of coherence.  Unaware of the other’s existence, they both began to explore the paths to organization.  Chris chose to pursue a large-scale, recreationally-based tennis club which would allow beginners and advanced players, alike, the opportunity to meet, organize, and participate in club-run tournaments.  Jimmy, however, chose to pursue a competitive club that would compete intercollegiately against regional schools.  Both Chris and Jimmy went about advertising their visions throughout the school via ubiquitous fliers and calls to administrative officials and other already established clubs.  Not surprisingly, Chris stumbled upon one of Jimmy’s fliers, which asked if anyone wanted to create a traveling club tennis team.  Seeing this flier as competition, Chris recorded Jimmy’s contact information and proceeded to confront this tennis intruder who threatened Chris’s recreational vision.

The two, nonetheless, became friends soon after, but both were steadfast in their respective visions - one recreational with hundreds of members and one competitive with a few advanced members.  After weeks of amiable arguing, Chris and Jimmy decided to compromise. The UC Davis Tennis Club was now to be a bi-faceted club: with a recreational component and a competitive component under the auspices of a central administration.  To their surprise, the club has been a grand success.

It should also be noted and credit should be given to Mark Otten who started the original UC Davis Club in 1999.  However, after he graduated from UC Davis in 2003, there was no one to follow in his footsteps.  Mark went to UCLA for graduate school where he also started the club tennis program there.  The two clubs played against each other on April 19, 2008 at the USTA National Campus Championship in Cary, North Carolina.  Mark showed he still had loyalty to UC Davis by wearing his UC Davis socks with his UCLA apparel.

The club, re-founded in August 2006, is now in its second year and boasts a membership of more than 200 members, with twenty of those on traveling teams.  The club now has weekly hit-arounds, practices, social events, and intra-club tournaments.  Becoming so successful and legitimized, the UC Davis Tennis Club now provides the crutch for local schools to establish their own teams, using UC Davis' organization and friendship as inspiration.
