USTA Campus Championship - Mid-Atlantic
The USTA Campus Championship - Mid-Atlantic is a fun and competitive event for collegiate club and intramural tennis teams from across the USTA Mid-Atlantic section.  The USTA Mid-Atlantic section hosted its first USTA Campus Championship in 2006 at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. with 9 club teams participating.  Now in our sixth year, we have seen as many as 16 unique schools participate in this event!  The Championship, which uses the exciting co-ed World TeamTennis format is played at the beginning of the spring semester annually.  The top teams from the USTA Campus Championship - Mid-Atlantic are granted automatic bids to the USTA National Campus Championship and receive a stipend from the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section to attend the National Championship!

2010 USTA Campus Championship - Mid-Atlantic Recap
The 2010 USTA Campus Championship - Mid-Atlantic was held January 30-31 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.  The 5th year for the tournament saw 13 unique teams attend from around the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section (with three others forced to turn their cars around in the raging snowstorm) for their chance to compete for the title and an automatic bid to the 2010 USTA National Campus Championship!

Nothing could stop the tournament, not even the snow storm.  Nothing could stop the University of Maryland - College Park.  The Sectional Campus Champions didn't let anything get in their way of improving upon last year's runner-up finish.

Norfolk received over seven inches of snow.  The city shut down.  Old Dominion University was closed.  But in spite all of this, the Folkes/Stevens Indoor Tennis Center remained open.  Maryland advanced to the finals and defeated the College of William & Mary 29-20.

Each team plays a set of men and women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.  The number of games won is added up for the final team score.

Thirteen schools battled for four spots in the 2010 USTA National Campus Championship, which will be held April 15-17 in Surprise, Ariz.

In the semifinals, William & Mary nipped the University of Virginia (the Mid-Atlantic Tennis On Campus Series Champion) 22-21.  Maryland defeated Old Dominion 30-13.

In the third-place playoff, Virginia dominated Old Dominion University 28-11.

Each of the top four schools received automatic bids to compete to the USTA National Campus Championship.

Georgetown University and Virginia Tech placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

To qualify for the quarterfinals, Virginia, Georgetown, and Maryland went undefeated in their flights.  The top two teams in each flight advanced to the final eight.  Towson, George Washington, and Virginia Tech qualified by finishing second in their flights.

In the last flight, William & Mary finished in a three-way tie with West Virginia and Old Dominion.  Based on winning percentage, Old Dominion finished first and William & Mary (the eventual finalist) placed second by 1/1000 of a decimal to advance!

The weekend showcased some great tennis and some great fun for all.  Towson State University players was voted by their peers to receive the Team Sportsmanship award and Virginia captain Lisa Addison received the Individual Sportsmanship award.  West Virginia University's Clara Haught was the raffle winner and won a Dunlop tennis racquet.
