USTA Campus Championship - Missouri Valley
The first USTA Campus Championship - Missouri Valley was held in 2005 at Kingspointe Tennis Club in Belleville, Ill.  The event started with just six teams from four schools, but has since taken off.  The 2010 USTA Campus Championship - Missouri Valley in Springfield, Mo. had 16 teams from 15 universities!  The event is played using the coed World TeamTennis format, which ofers teams the opportunity to compete in mens and womens singles and doubles and mixed doubles.  Top placing teams receive automatic bids to attend the USTA National Campus Championship on behalf of the USTA Missouri Valley Section.

2010 USTA Campus Championship - Missouri Valley Recap
Sixteen college club tennis teams from 15 universities from the USTA Missouri Valley section arrived in Springfield, Mo. for the USTA Campus Championship - Missouri Valley.  The tournament was held Feb. 27-28, at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

Each of the 16 teams came to the event to have fun, enjoy each other’s company, take part in the competition and represent their respective schools, all with the hope of earning a bid to the “Big Dance” of Tennis on Campus tournaments.  The tournament featured the World TeamTennis format, showcasing men's and women's singles and doubles and mixed doubles, with the top three teams moving on to represent the Missouri Valley section at the 2010 USTA National Campus Championship, April 15-17 in Surprise, Ariz.

Both Saturday and Sunday’s matches were played inside due to the area’s brisk winter weather, resulting in a long day for all 16 teams who each played three matches on Saturday and one or two on Sunday.

The fight for first, second, and third place came down to some nail-biting action and close matches Sunday afternoon.  The St. Louis University Club Tennis Team, last year’s runner-up, faced the University of Missouri Club Tennis Team, who were competing in their first Section Championship for first and second, and the Iowa State University Club Tennis Team faced the Washington University in St. Louis Club Tennis Team for third and fourth place.  There were huge forehands and booming serves being hit from all four teams, a great way to end a weekend of fun and sport.  While each team wanted to win their final match, only three of them could move on to nationals.  St. Louis defeated Missouri 26-22, and Iowa State finished third with their 27-20 victory over Washington.

Tournament Director Dan Bratetic offered some congratulatory remarks for this year’s top three teams, “Best of luck to St. Louis University, Missouri, and Iowa State, who will be great representatives for our section at the USTA National Campus Championship in April.  Also, best of luck to Washington University who will play at the Tennis On Campus Spring Invitational - West in Tucson, Ariz., that same week.”

Although not all teams will be able to compete in this year’s National Championship, each team had a great and unique experience here.  They are able to continue feeding their competitive spirits while also meeting other college students they otherwise would not have met.
