USTA Campus Championship - Northern California
The USTA Campus Championship - Northern California is a fun and competitive event for collegiate club tennis and intramural tennis teams from across the USTA Northern California section.  The first event took place in 2003 with 7 teams from 5 schools; in 2009, 26 teams from 11 unique schools participated.  The Championship uses the exciting, dynamic, and co-ed World TeamTennis format.  Winning teams are granted automatic bids to the USTA National Campus Championship and receive a stipend from the USTA Northern California Section to attend the National Championship.

2009 USTA Campus Championship - Northern California Recap
The 2009 USTA Campus Championship - Northern California took place at Stanford University, November 14-15, 2009.  The seventh annual tournament hosted 26 teams from 11 unique schools.

Nathan Hong, a senior at California State University - East Bay, captained the first team to ever to compete in a Tennis On Campus event.  "This is fun and exciting, but also nerve-wracking trying to keep track of the rules and all of my players. I knew to expect tough competition, but I'm still suprised at how good some of these teams are," Nathan said.  The team is a result of some hard work recruiting players and organizing the club.  Nathan added, "I started with a table in the Union over lunch passing out flyers and talking to people.  I emailed everyone who was interested and over 25 people showed up for a tennis event I organized last spring.  We practice once a week and continue to get new players from the P.E. teacher, Richard Sotelo."

City College of San Francisco returned to the USTA Campus Championship - Northern California with two teams after a couple of years not competing.  Captains Sourabh Sharma and Tiffany Lam recruit players from the college's P.E. classes.  They brought one of the most eclectic group of players reflecting their school's diverse population.  International players from places like Guam and Armenia are just getting started on their college careers while many other teammates have returned to the city college after completing 4 year degrees decades earlier.  USTA Adult League players Margaret Hahn and Barb Coffey are the moms who've returned for a few classes. As seasoned "team" competitors, they bring a lot of experience to the group.

USTA Northern California Tennis on Campus Coordinator, Hilary Somers, was so pleased with the turnout and the sportsmanship.  "I hope everyone had a fun weekend playing in the tournament.  Congratulations to UC - Berkeley (Gold), as they won the tournament for the 5th consecutive year, beating UC - Davis (Gold) in the finals."

"Stanford University (White) and Stanford University (Cardinal) finished 3rd and 4th.  All 3 teams - UC - Berkeley, UC - Davis, and Stanford University - earned bids to the 2010 USTA National Campus Championship.  I would also like to congratulate Napa Valley College for winning the sportsmanship award for the tournament.  I enjoyed watching all of the teams compete in such an honorable manner over the course of the weekend.  You are an inspiring group and do an excellent job representing your university.  Captains, I appreciate your leadership and commitment both on and off the court.  Thank you."

“Our NorCal Campus Championship is drawing more and more teams every year.  We went from 20 teams last year to 26 teams this year.  The Tennis On Campus program is growing rapidly on the NorCal campuses which is seen through the schools submitting multiple teams to compete at the sectional event.  I continue to be amazed every year at the leadership demonstrated by the team captains that step up to organize a team.  College students are busy and it takes a lot to get them to commit to an entire weekend of tennis.  It is so fun to see these kids compete so well in their tennis and socialize with all the other students over the course of the weekend.  Win or lose, they all seem to go home having had a fun weekend."
