| California State University – Northridge was the site of the 2010 USTA Campus Championship - Southern California. Fifteen teams, representing 9 unique schools, competed for the privilege of representing Southern California at the 2010 USTA National Campus Championship. The stakes were high as only the top 3 finishers are guaranteed entry. Returning to defend their 2009 title was University of Southern California (USC), who would face tough teams from around the USTA Southern California Section. Saturday consisted of Pool Play with the top 8 teams moving to the Gold Bracket on Sunday. The remaining teams comprised the Silver Bracket. There was tension immediately in the first round of the Gold Bracket, as UC-Irvine, who had the best winning percentage from pool play, was forced to come from behind. They won the Mixed Doubles match, forcing overtime. Winning the overtime game, forced UCLA into a Super Tiebreaker. Their momentum continued as they went on to beat the UCLA "B," 21-20 and continue in the Gold Bracket. The other three first round matches saw the top seeds easily defeat their opponents. In the semifinals, USC faced UCI, while UCLA took on UCSB. The UCI team tried to work it’s magic for a second time, taking USC into overtime; however, USC took control of the match, winning the first overtime game, and securing a place in the finals. In the other semifinal match, UCSB defeated the UCLA mixed doubles team 6-5 pushing the match to overtime. UCLA rose to the occasion, winning the next game and match, placing them against USC in the finals. Expectations were high on both sides of the court, as cross town rivals USC and UCLA squared off for the Championship. While the doubles matches went easily to the USC teams, UCLA tightened up the team match score after winning both singles matches. UCLA found themselves down 17-15 going into Mixed Doubles. USC was not to be denied a consecutive championship, defeating UCLA in Mixed Doubles to be crowned the 2010 Southern California Campus Champions. In the playoff for third place (for an automatic bid into the National Tournament) UCI defeated UCSB. The Silver Bracket was played concurrently. The Cal Poly – A team, top seed in the Silver Bracket, took control in the first two rounds, as did the USC "B" in the opposite side of the draw. Meeting in the finals, USC took Cal Poly to overtime, before Cal Poly took control and won the Silver Bracket 23-21 over USC. The 2010 Team Spirit Award was presented to UC Irvine recognizing their good sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and respect towards other team members and opponents |
