A few days after Serena Williams & Andy Murray were crowned the 2012 US Open Champions, another battle began at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center - The 2012 USTA Battle of the Sections “A Northeast Region Event.”
2012 marked the 6th anniversary of the tournament in which sixteen Tennis on Campus teams from four USTA Sections competed for the trophy, including Eastern, Mid-Atlantic, Middle States & New England.
Competing teams played three round robin matches on Saturday to determine their place in the gold, silver, copper and bronze brackets.
Sunday’s bracket play saw the University of Virginia and University of Maryland advance to the finals of the Gold. The Silver Bracket saw four New England Schools play off, with Boston College coming out on top. Rutgers came out as winners of the Bronze bracket and James Madison University, winners of the Copper Bracket. UVA and Maryland took to the courts Sunday for the finals, with UVA taking home the Championship trophy. Harvard University was voted Team Sportsmanship by their peers over the weekend.
All players received t-shirts, and 1st and 2nd place in all four brackets received a tournament trophy as well as player gifts.
Results were also calculated for the USTA Section winner of the Battle of the Sections, which is determined by each team’s results from the tournament. New England took home the title for the second year in a row, having the best results over all from their four teams: Harvard University, Brown University, Northeastern University, and Boston College. New England will be added to the Battle of the Sections Silver bowl and they will showcase it at their office until next year’s Section winner is determined. Congratulations New England!
We would like to thank the following people for their efforts in organizing and executing the tournament: Sonia Sader (Eastern), Mary Wurtz (Middle States), Avi Parida (Mid-Atlantic), Shell Wood (Virginia), Sarah Rice (New England), the USTA National Tennis Center and all the players who participated!
