The University of Alabama Club Tennis Team took home top honors at the inaugural USTA Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational held at the Burns Park Tennis Center in North Little Rock, Ark. from Oct. 22 to Oct. 24.

Alabama defeated the University of Maryland Club Tennis Team 22-20 in the finals. The event served as a kick-off of the Tennis On Campus season which will culminate next April with the 2011 USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship in Cary, N.C.

The University of Alabama advanced to the Championship match by defeating the Michigan State Club Tennis Team 26-17 in the semifinals and the University of Minnesota Club Tennis Team 28-16 in the quarterfinals.

This event marked the first time that the USTA Tennis On Campus program has held a season-opening event. Fifteen teams from across the country participated in this inaugural event, five more schools than the first USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship in 2000, which hosted 10 teams from six schools.

We had an amazing weekend filled with exciting and competitive tennis,” said Glenn Arrington, National Manager, USTA Tennis On Campus. “This inaugural Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational was the perfect way to jump into the Tennis On Campus 2010-2011 season.

The USTA’s Tennis On Campus program is designed to provide college students with opportunities for team camaraderie, social networking, and spirited competition through tennis without the rigors of a varsity program. Perfect for athletes who have chosen not to make the jump from high school to college varsity, Tennis On Campus offers co-ed team-based play, regional and national championship competition, and helps students maintain active and healthy lifestyles through their college years. Currently, the program is offered on over 525 college campuses, and services more than 30,000 students.
