Crossing Over – USTA Tennis On Campus Players Compete in USTA Leagues

Daniel Chang and Shanna Lin, recent graduates from Rutgers University have spent the summer playing tennis and competing as part of a team - but it wasn’t with their usual Tennis On Campus crew, it was with their USTA League teams. The pair competed in the USTA Eastern Section Mixed Doubles Championship.

Chang, 2010-2011 President of the Rutgers Tennis On Campus Team, is a four-year veteran of USTA League. “My Godmother - who helped develop my game at a young age - needed a partner for her mixed-doubles league. Naturally, she wanted to partner with me. Since then, I’ve been an active USTA League player, as it gives me an added opportunity to compete.” In addition to playing 9.0 mixed doubles, Chang also plays for the New Jersey Passaic 5.0 Men’s team. “I’d recommend USTA League to anybody, including college players. I’ve come up against some of the stiffest competition I’ve ever had to face in league and Sectional playoffs.”

In contrast to Chang’s veteran status with both Tennis On Campus and USTA League, this year marked the first time Lin participated in either. Lin joined the Rutgers team when she received an invitation after playing in a tournament that the club hosted. A short time later Chang (whom she started dating after joining the club team) asked her to play with him on his mixed doubles team. “USTA League is perfect for college students – especially those who don’t know how to get started in competitive tennis.”

Both players are looking forward to next year, especially after advancing to the Section Championship. “We competed hard, but just came up short,” comments Chang on his team’s performance. “Just reaching the playoffs was thrilling, and we’ll definitely try to come back with a stronger showing next year.” Lin adds, “we all competed hard and enjoyed the great experience.”
