Harvard University and USTA New England Capture Title at the 2011 USTA Battle of the Sections

Harvard University 2011 BOS Winners

Only a few days after Novak Djokovic was crowned the 2011 US Open Men’s Champion, another battle began at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center: The 2011 Battle of the Sections “A Northeast Region Event.”

In its fifth year, sixteen Tennis on Campus teams from four USTA Sections competed for the trophy, including USTA Eastern, USTA Middle States, USTA New England, and USTA Mid-Atlantic.

Teams played three round robin matches on Saturday to determine their place in the gold and silver brackets. Brown, Boston College, University of Virginia, Syracuse University, Penn State, Maryland University, Harvard University and Villanova all placed as the top two in their pool play and advanced to the Gold Bracket on Sunday. While the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Stony Brook, Georgetown, George Washington, Rutgers, Delaware and Dartmouth advanced to the Silver Bracket for Sunday matches.

Sunday’s bracket play saw the University of Virginia and Harvard University advance to the finals of the Gold, and University of Pennsylvania and George Washington University to the finals of the Silver. UPenn and GWU elected a coin toss to determine the winner of their match as court time was coming to an end and long drives back to school were ahead. GWU won the coin toss. While UVA and Harvard took to the courts Sunday for the finals, with Harvard taking home the Championship trophy. Congratulations Harvard University!

All players received t-shirts, 1st and 2nd place in Gold and Silver brackets received a tournament trophy, and 1st and 2nd place in gold team members received a player gift for their efforts.

Results were also calculated for the Section winner of the Battle of the Sections, which is determined by each team’s results from the tournament. USTA New England is taking home this title for 2011, having the best results over all from their four teams: Harvard University, Brown University, Dartmouth College, and Boston College. USTA New England will be added to the Battle of the Sections Silver bowl and they will showcase it at their office until next year’s Section winner is determined. Congratulations USTA New England!

Special thanks to: Sonia Sader (USTA Eastern), Thane Schweyer (formerly of USTA Middle States), Avi Parida (USTA Mid-Atlantic), Shell Wood (USTA Virginia), Sarah Rice (USTA New England), Debrose Andrews (USTA Official), the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and all the players who participated!
