Fall Invitational Team Spotlight: Ferris State University

Ferris State for FI Profile

We're counting down to the 2014 Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational, and will be shining the spotlight on participating teams.  Let's take a closer look at this team from the Midwest Section that was the 2014 TOC Club of the Year:  Ferris State University.

Q:  What did you do over the summer to keep in shape?

A:  Those who are a part of the Professional Tennis Management program at Ferris State played tennis quite frequently over the summer in addition to teaching it.  Other members ran frequently and played other sports for fun as cross-training.  As for myself (Cole Heule – Club President), I opted to eat a lot of fast food, but balanced it with a lot of tennis! 

Q:  What is your team looking forward to most in attending the 2014 USTA Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational?

A:  We are, for one thing, excited to leave the cold climate of Michigan!  It will probably be snowing by the time the tournament occurs, anyway.  Additionally, we are excited to meet and watch some awesome tennis players, as we know this event attracts some large names.  It will be fun for our players to observe them in action, as well as get to know our various comrades from all over the map.

Q:  How does your team unwind after a day of matches?

A:  Usually hanging out as a team and exploring the town in which we have a tournament/match.  Lots of walking around - being immersed in the city, as well as interacting with our friends from other Club Tennis teams.

Q:  How does your team exhibit school spirit?

A:  We are greatly supportive of each other.  In a way, the team resembles a family, and so when we are on the court, we pump each other up and remain positive with each other.  We’d like to say we exhibit positive vibes on behalf of Ferris State, in doing this.  Outside of tennis, a lot of our members go to various sporting events on campus to support Ferris, as well.

Q:  Did any members of your team play on the same high school tennis team or play against each other in high school?

A:  Yes!  We do have some friendly rivalries among some of our players that have played either against each other, or alongside each other during the high school seasons.

Q:  How does your team give back to the local community?

A:  Our members are frequently involved in setting up/running play days for kids in the community, usually at little to no cost.  With those, we also create scholarship opportunities for those local kids, so that they are able to keep their love of the game going without money being a large factor in their future endeavors.  We are hoping to explore more opportunities this year - with possibilities of assisting at food donation shelters, Crop Walks, and so forth.

Q:  Please share a funny story with us.

A:  One time at the Badger Classic, we took the local Chipotle by storm, because it is a luxury not found in the town of Big Rapids.  In addition, some of our members had not yet experienced it, so there was a larger incentive to push our team towards that establishment… Because it’s delicious!

Q:  What’s the one thing you’d want to share with people about your team?

A:  At this moment, I want everyone to know that we were given the honor of the Tennis On Campus National Club Team of the Year Award - which we are incredibly humbled and appreciative of.
