ORLANDO, Fla. -- A new champion is guaranteed to be crowned at the 2017 Tennis On Campus National Championship this year after upsets reigned supreme on Day 1.

The 18th edition of the coed club tennis tournament kicked off today at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona, but both defending champs Auburn University and 2016 runners-up University of North Carolina each failed to win their four-team round-robin pool and advance to the gold bracket.

The Tigers finished pool play at 1-2 and can therefore finish no better than 33rd overall if they win the bronze bracket, while the Tar Heels finished second in their bracket with a 2-1 mark.

The state of Pennsylvania was unkind to last year’s finalists as the University of Pennsylvania defeated Auburn, 26-14, to win Pool K, while Pennsylvania State University defeated North Carolina 28-25 en route to a Pool E victory.

UCLA, along with the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Florida, and the University of Georgia are the four previous champions still alive in the 2017 tournament. Tomorrow’s knockout round begins with the Round of 16 at 8 a.m. followed by the quarterfinals tomorrow afternoon.

Home Sweet Home

The hometown University of Central Florida, playing on the home court of their varsity counterparts, advanced to the gold bracket with a perfect 3-0 performance in pool play today. After decisive wins over the University of Rhode Island and Miami University, the Golden Knights earned the all-important third win over previously 2-0 Gonzaga University, 29-15.

Sunshine State of Mind

Teams representing the USTA Florida section fared well playing in their home state as the University of Central Florida was joined in the knockout round by the University of Florida. The Gators defeated Washington University, Rutgers University and DePaul University to stay perfect on the day. The University of Miami also had a strong showing, finishing the day 2-1 including a win over the defending national champion Auburn Tigers, advancing to the silver bracket.

California Dreaming

The state of California will be well-represented in tomorrow’s knockout round as four teams advanced to the Round of 16. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UCLA, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Irvine all moved on after going three-for-three in today’s pool play. UCLA and Cal Poly, rivals representing the USTA Southern California section, will face off in tomorrow’s opening round.

The Rookies

Seven teams made their Tennis On Campus National Championship debut today. Binghamton University, Kent State University, Rice University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Rhode Island, and the University of Texas Arlington all competed for the first time.

Notre Dame carried the flag for the newcomers, winning its last match of the day against the University of Pittsburgh to advance to the bronze bracket.
