The USTA Tennis On Campus program has announced its Club of the Year Award winner for the 2010-2011season, awarding the prestigious title to Lone Star College-CyFair(LSC).

The USTA Tennis On Campus Club of the Year Award is presented annually to the college or university club tennis team that has achieved a level of sustained excellence, while also demonstrating a commitment to giving back to their local community.  "This year’s winner is a model Tennis On Campus program," said Glenn Arrington, USTA Tennis On Campus National Manager.  "The team is made up of 56 members who are not only commited to growing the sport of tennis throughout the campus community, but are also dedicated to serving area charities and introducing tennis to a broader population thoughout the city of Houston."

By hosting tennis clinics for programs such as National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL), Special Olympics, Wheelchair Tennis and Cypress Assistance Ministries, the members of LSC have created opportunities for over 400 people throughout Houston.  Acts of kindness such as playing Wii Tennis with the elderly in a local retirement home and donating over $500 of 10 &  Under tennis equipment to an underprivileged elementary school speaks to the character of the students involved with the LSC Tennis On Campus program.

These activities as well as their experiences together have made this a close-knit team.  "We're far from being the best team skill-wise, but our players share special bonds and trust one another.  You can have all the talent in the world, but you won't get anywhere in Tennis On Campus without friendship," comments team Captain Jimmy Nguyen.

The USTA Tennis On Campus Leader of the Year Award is presented to the college student who has made significant contributions to the USTA's Tennis On Campus program in a manner that benefits the well-being of their fellow students and the surrounding community. Since becoming Club president, Ross has dedicated his time and efforts to providing a fun yet competitive environment for his teammates.  In just two years he was abe to double the amount of players on the team, by successfully catering to the needs of both competitive and recreational players at Towson.

"He worked tirelessly to walk the fine line of satisfying the needs of competitive players and nurturing the recreational players to make sure that everyone was getting what they wanted out of the club," stated Shell Wood, Tennis On Campus Mid-Atlantic Tournament Director.  "Through his dedication, the Towson Club Tennis Team made it for the first time into the gold bracket of a highly-competitive club tournament, which was a big accomplishment for Ross and for the team."

Ross has also made a difference off the court.  Under his leadership, The Towson Club Tennis Team served an area homeless shelder where they helped make over 300 sandwiches for the homeless over the holidays.  Additionally, Ross has taken his team to clean up the local forest, pick up trash in the college's local community and also led his team to participate and volunteer in a 5K race in Baltimore, MD.  "Ross Friedman epitomizes the type of young leaders we have participating in the Tennis On Campus program," said Glenn Arrington, National Manager, USTA Tennis On Campus.  "He is passionate and dedicated not only to the sport but to his local community as well."
