UVA wins Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational

Event held on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

The University of Virginia got a last-minute berth to the USTA's Tennis on Campus Fall Invitationals, and made it count in a big way.

UVA, which stepped in when the University of South Florida's team could not be present at the last minute, clinched first place after a hard-fought match against Duke University that ended in a 22-16 victory for the Cavaliers. Both schools' A-teams competed in the finals.

The finals capped three days of play on the clay courts of the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina from October 21 through 23. A total of 250 students participated in the event, which was held under cloudless skies. A total of 32 unique teams representing 23 schools played.

After emerging triumphant from round robin play, UVA reached the Gold Bracket finals after victories over the University of Dayton (A) in the 16th round (24-23), Old Dominion University (A) in the quarterfinals (24-20), and Wake Forest (A) in the semifinals (29-15).

In Silver Bracket play, Colorado School of Mines (A) defeated Duke University (B), 21-19. The consolation final saw North Carolina State University (A) defeat University of North Carolina Charlotte (A), 24-14.

The Bronze Bracket saw the College of Charleston (A) emerge victorious over the University of North Carolina Greensboro (B), 29-16. The consolation final saw Ohio University (A) defeat Macon State College (A), 24-17.
